Walsall had great affection for its trolleybuses, and had not the Labour Government announced the establishment of passenger transport authorities, leading to Walsall's loss of independence as operator of public transport in the area, it is likely that Walsall would have continued to operate trolleybuses for many more years.

Not long before the abandonment, Bournemouth had put on the market a number of very modern trolleybuses that were similar in design to the rear engined diesel buses that had appeared in recent years. The General Manager of Walsall Transport had planned to buy these and add auxilliary diesel engines. A couple of trolleybuses had engines fitted experimentally, but in effect Birmingham's takeover of public transport in Walsall scuppered the plans.

Hi Brian,
Yes, you are quite right. Robert is my son, he is 50 this year, and now lives in Stratford, London, working for Newham Council in one of the libraries. I still think he is in touch with one or two from Hickinbottom's. Think one lives in Wales, nowadays. He will be pleased that you have enquired about him. I'll pass it on. He is on Facebook, if you want to try your luck. His Uncle Ira (my brother) went to America for about ten years, but he's back home again, living in Merthyr Tydfil.
Regards
David Oakley.

Sir , Thankyou for such detail! I googled Brownhills fire station as a result of an article in the Lichfield Mercury reporting on a severe fire in Lichfield attended by Lichfield Tamworth and Brownhills . I never expected to find such information, Thankyou. What I would like to do is ask if you could contact me to discuss a potential feature for our magazine Fire Cover. I can send a copy of our quarterly magazine to you so that you can see part of what we are about- its our 50th anniversary year and I am involved with organising a couple of big visits to Manchester where we were founded. I notice a couple of Society members have commented on your page. I live inAlrewas and work in Aldridge. I hope we can assist each other and thanks in advance for your site and any help you may be able to give. I can remember playing on the park opposite the station years ago and seeing the fire engines parked on the front.I also think Aldridhe we to three pumps when first opened. Thanks again, Steve.

Hi Bill
It might not seem that long but it's actually about 40 years ago!
I well remember the football in the lunch break. After football it was back to work re-lining commercial brake shoes for BRS, S Jones of Aldridge and Horace Kendrick.
Happy days and good to hear from you.
